Preppy live @ The Skybar

On June 3rd, PREPPY rocked out at The Skybar for a short and sweet set consisting of the following songs:

1) intro
2) fascinated
3) second grade
4) happy
5) passing notes
6) new distraction
7) caroline

Being only Preppy’s second show, as you can see, the set was nearly identical to the M.I.T. show, with the addition of one brand new song called “new distraction”, played live for the first time. It also seemed to be one of the most well received songs on the set. It was a lot of fun to play, and resulted in some unexpected improvisations from all members of the band. Rock.

The Skybar also marked the first time preppy played live as a trio. The set went pretty smooth, and the band was tight with a few difficulties. There definitely could have been more people, but regardless, it was fun, and a good experience. Friends of the band, the broken word and Jonathan Sorge were among the 5 acts that played that night. A special thanks to Jay for getting the show. Here are some pics from the show:

thanks to graham for the pics. i’ll post an mp3 or two from the show when i get a chance.

New York City and the Pink Tassles

Well well well, here we are, a month later, and I’m finally deciding to update. Sorry for the delay, but I’ve just been really lazy. So much has happened. Well to start things off, I graduated. Steven Tyler of Aerosmith and Grammy winning jazz vocalist Dianne Reeves spoke at our graduation. Pretty neato. My parents came into town for the ceremony and stayed for a few days. So every night i got to eat out at nice restaurants. It was awesome. One night in particular, we were at The Rockbottom in the theater district and i happened to see a couple of basketball players just hanging out. It was Kenyon Martin and Aaron Williams of the New Jersey Nets, and at the time i guess they were in town playing the Celtics. Huge guys. Oddly, it seemed that nobody really noticed them which must have been nice considering that they’re usually surrounded by fans and the media. And hey, did I mention they’re going to the NBA Finals? Craziness. So yeah, parents were in town, and it was fun. One thing that kinda sucked was the fact that I had conjunctivitis (pink eye) for pretty much the entire graduation week. So during the festivities I had this swollen left eye that looked half closed the whole time. Grad pictures are hilarious, in that i look very ogre-esque. Oh well, at least my eye matched our ultra lame PINK TASSLES. Haha..but i’m healed now so it’s all good. The week following graduation was pretty laid back, as Ethan and Joey went home, and Ben had already left for Nashville. Allen and I got to spend some good chill time, as it finally started to settle in that he wouldn’t be here this summer. Trips to the mall, the breakfast club, and writing bubble-gum pop seemed to take up most of our time, but we realized that we had to have at least one cool trip before we went our seperate ways. Allen and I have been huge fans of Silverchair’s new album, “Diorama” since it came out last year. For those that don’t remember them, they were those grungy kids from Australia that had that hit “Tomorrow” when they were 15 years old. “You gonna wait till fat boy, fat boy, wait till tomorrow…” Anyway, now they’re a lot more mature, as they’re fourth and latest release is a very melodic, emotional, and expressive rock album that is compareable to The Beach Boys Pet Sounds in the way that it experiments with music of its time. It has some rock opera elements, a la Queen, and progressive elements, and it’s all tied together with rich orchestrations, 3 of which were arranged by Van Dyke Parks, who has worked with Brian Wilson before. Ok so ANYWAY, the album is a smash in their native Australia, winning many awards including album, and artist of the year etc…but it hasn’t left a big impression here in the states. Consequently, their “Across the Night Tour” was limited to approximately 4 dates in the US, 2 in Los Angeles, and 2 in New York City. Each venue was to be very intimate, no more than 500 people in attendance, to better suit the music. Naturally, the tickets were sold out, but Allen and I were determined to go to NYC and catch these guys. So that’s where ebay came into play. Joey was arriving back the weekend before the show and so we all managed to secure tickets over ebay a couple days before the show. Joey’s seller was flying in from Texas or something to see the show, and our seller was probably just from around the New York area. We decided to just meet them outside the venue the day of for pickup….so on Monday, May 19…it was off to NYC.. Me, Allen and Joey loaded up into Allen’s volvo, said goodbye to the Raj and the Lehman, and we were off. But it wouldn’t be without problems. About an hour into our trip, Allen’s car overheated and had a coolant leak, and so we had to get it back and take Joey’s car. We lost about 2-3 hours, going back and forth, but it was all good, just less chill time in NYC before the show. We arrived in NYC at around 6pm. Parked the car in some garage, took the metro into the village, and hit up Little Italy for a nice little pre-show dinner. We sat outside at this nice little italian restaurant. The weather was perfect. We got to the show at 8pm and it ROCKED. It was definitely one of the best shows that i’ve seen. Daniel Johns, the frontman is such an outstanding vocalist. And the whole band was soo tight. Refreshing in a sense. We even saw some celebrities in the crowd. John Norris of MTV was there watching from the balcony, Tom DeLonge of Blink 182 was there with who appeared to be his wife, and the guitarist of Good Charlotte was just hanging out in the crowd the whole time. Joey and I were pretty much starstruck, but for everyone else, they seemed to be so relaxed about it. We don’t get many celebs here in Boston. Maybe it’s a New Yorker thing.. After the show, we caught up with John Norris and I even took a picture of him and Joey. Then, it was off to my friend’s place of whom i called earlier that day for a place to crash. We got a little lost on the way, but eventually we made it to Gina’s place. It’s a really small studio, but it has a great view that overlooks the river. Really cozy. After careful debate, we decided that we just wanted to drive back that night. Gina had an exam in the morning so we didn’t want to be an inconvenience. So at around 2:30am we left her place to go pick up the car at the garage, only to find that it was CLOSED! Apparently it wasn’t a 24 hour garage and it didn’t open again until 6am. So, instead of just wandering around the streets for hours, we ended up going back to Gina’s to crash. She was really cool about everything. Me, Allen and Joey were sort of forced to share the same bed, while Gina took the couch, but it was funny regardless. Even busted out a bottle of wine, and had some interesting conversations about um…star wars. ;-) We left Gina’s place around 9 or 10am, following a little boxing match between allen and gina’s dog. And that was that… On Tuesday we were back at Imrie, and on Wednesday, Joey and I cleared out a portion of our unfinished basement and setup a rehearsal/chill area. We built a drum platform from scratch and setup rugs, a pool table, a dart board, among other things. It’s really starting to shape up, and makes me wonder why we never took advantage of that free space down there before. Oh well, 3 months left to enjoy. Later, before crashing, Allen and I said our goodbyes, but didn’t really make a big deal about it. It’s crazy though, b/c he was the first friend i made up in boston (4 years ago) and since then we’ve been great friends, so it’s sad to see him go. We’re all gonna miss him. But we’ll be in touch. I caught a flight the following day to DC for my mom’s 50th birthday. My mom had never thrown a birthday party for herself, but for her 50th she wanted to change that. All she wanted was for all her close friends that she’s made over the years, from around the globe, to come for her 50th. And indeed, they all came. Friends from London, Europe, Hong Kong, Philippines etc., and all over the United States were at our house on the evening of the 24th of May. I was really glad to see my mom as happy as she was. It was a blast. While I was home, I also got to hang out a lot with Majeed. It was a awesome, we went to an Irish pub in Old Town the first night, and then spent what seemed to be every night at his sister’s new house. Definitely a really cool place to hang out. Amadeus is cool…(vg) Alex was back from boot camp so it was cool to see him again. Ah yes, and I can still hear the chanting from the Irish pub…”Who the f#c* is alex?!?” Hehe. Got to hang out with Bruce and Mary also. Saw Maricel as well, she was really cool to let me borrow her “junior”. A little bummed that I won’t be around the DC area this summer, but hopefully they’ll be able to come up and visit. In fact, I just moved into my new room (allen’s old room) and it’s sweeet. I’ve got so much space now. Nate arrived in town yesterday, and he has just officially moved into my old room. We all went out last night actually to celebrate his return, and it was off the hook. Me, Shwin, Nate, Ethan and Jesse started out going to Mike’s party, which was okay, but we really wanted to go to a bar. So, minus Ethan and Jesse, we embarked to “Tonic”. It was pretty freakin cool. Saw a LOT of cute girls actually. Shots and bottles of beer for shwin and joey, gin and tonic for me, and beer for nate. There was a group of girls that we ended up following to another bar, where we finally got to talk. There was this really attractive girl in particular, her name was Veronica…really cool, and somehow i managed to get her number…and put it in my CELL PHONE! Holla! That’s right..haha i have a cell phone. Still need to figure out how to use all these features. Anyway, so like when that bar closed @ 2am, we all moved on to Quan’s Kitchen, with our new beer mugs, for a little late night chinese cuisine. The night was definitely good, all i can say is…very goooood. Haha, alright this has definitely been my longest entry ever, and I’m sure there’s a lot of things that i’ve missed, but I’m just blabbing on now, so i’ll cut it here. But, enjoy these pics that chronicle our journey to NYC. Rock and Roll. BLINDED

Yeah, “Blinded” is the name of their new single. Sure, “Blinded” has a subtle reference to the band name. But last night, my eyes were wide open in awe of how many hot girls i saw at the show.

It was Shwin and Christian in one car, and me, Allen, Joey, and Zania blasting Avril Lavigne in another car. We headed out to Worchester to catch Third Eye Blind, live @ Holy Cross. It’s this college about an hour outside of Boston, and it definitely resembled what life would have been like at a smaller state college of sorts. An actual campus existed, and there was an assortment of short-haired, clean-cut guys and perhaps an over abundance (dare i say it?) of really cute college chicks. It was unreal. We were all in awe.

There was virtually no promotion done for this show, as it was a college gig that was intended pretty much for the students of this particular college. It was a rather intimate show, considering 3eb has played stadiums. AM Radio opened. The concert took place in their gym, called the “Hart Center”. At times it almost felt like a dream. I felt like i was in some sort of alternate dimension, where there were tons of cute girls surrounding us in a school gym and to top it off, you’ve got one of your fav bands playing live music for you.

I remember thinking that my surroundings were seemingly an extension of what high school would have been like had there been a 13th grade. Ah, the mysterious path untaken. Haha, oh well. I suppose after going to school with a bunch of musicians, and living in the city, you forget about the type of crowd you grew up around. It was nostalgic and very refreshing in a way. And the girls…oh man.. I remember we thought to ourselves…”So THIS is where they’ve all been hiding!!”
Who would’ve thought that some of the cutest girls in Massachussetts were actually an hour outside of Boston, at this small and selective school in Worcester? Mind blowing..

Oh, and by the way, the concert was good.

DOWNLOAD PREPPY LIVE

Well, here it is. For your downloading pleasure, the entire set of preppy’s first show @ M.I.T. Please excuse the poor quality, as it was essentially an audience recording *cough*bootleg*cough* ahem, but hey better than nothing, right? Enjoy!

PREPPY, LIVE @ Theta-Chi

Well last night, the party was kickin’ and the smoothies were pourin’ as PREPPY played its first show ever at the Theta-Chi Fraternity @ M.I.T. After two brief rehearsals, both taking place the day of the show, and the day before, Preppy played a short but sweet set of prep classics including:

fascinated
second grade
happy (star corps academy)
passing notes
caroline

it was a good turnout and the music appeared to be well received. i saw a lot of new and familiar faces…my friend sarah actually showed up, which was a nice surprise, considering i haven’t seen her in forever it seems. people said that i should play out more, so we’ll see what happens. sandwiched between two more established bands, the broken word, and my friends for reasons unseen, it definitely felt good to be up there rocking out. I was surprised how comfortable i felt up there. Thanks to allen, joey and nate for helping to make it happen.
Here are some pics from the night:

Speaking of preppy, another show might be in the works…but more info as things develop. I will be post up a bootleg live clip of one of the songs from last night’s preppy set a little later.
In other news, the washington wizards were officially eliminated from the 2003 NBA playoffs, as the Milwaukee Bucks edged the Toronto Raptors in Toronto last night. Such a shame that MJ won’t be able to make his final appearance in the playoffs this year, but hopefully the younger guys have learned a lot from him. Only time will tell.
Well, I guess that’s all for now…i must be going…but thanks to all that came out to the show!
Peace in the middle east..

Blue City, 1m6: “Hit and Run”

At last, here i am about 7 days later, and i’m happy to say that much has been accomplished. The music for my short film “Blue City” was written and recorded in about two days. My director didn’t think that I could pull it off, because we’re talking about a project that was supposed to take about a month to complete. But alas, I completed it. I was essentially writing the music up until (and during) my recording session which took place April 4, 2003; 4pm-9pm @ the berkee film scoring studio.

I am a little dissapointed in myself for having procrastinated so much on it, (especially given that this is the culmination of my film scoring studies @ berklee), but especially because I know that it could have been a lot better…if i had only alotted more time for it. Regardless, the music works and I feel that it is effective, so I suppose that is all a director could ask for. And now i know that I can pull off a short film in 2 days. ;-) Anyway, i thought i’d post one of the cues from my score, for those of you that are curious. So here is the 6th cue from “Blue City”, entitled “Hit and Run”, a short but rather haunting piano piece, which occurs before the climax of the film.

1m6 “Hit and Run” from Blue City-Music by Eric Espiritu (click)

In other news, my car finally sold on ebay! Indeed, the same car that was considered “totalled” by local garages which offered no more than $50 to take it off my hands, was sold on ebay for $710. There were actually some rather enthusiastic bidders from all over the country that found the car as a great “project” for them. The winner is from Alabama, and he’s planning a trip up to boston just to come and get it. There was another bidder from Florida who really wanted it that was going to pay an additional $700+ just to have it shipped down to him. Amazing.

So my weekend was pretty cool. Very laid back, tried to catch up on some rest. Didn’t have to work, thankfully. The dreary weather has forced Gap to cut down on some hours, so I can’t complain. The wizards are still in the playoff hunt after a dramatic overtime victory here in Boston yesterday.

Went to see FRU @ an m.i.t auditorium last night. “Relive the Memory” was intense. Not to mention one of the most memorable climaxes and endings to their set. Allen’s going nuts on stage, running around, hitting the ground, playing the guitar with his teeth, and then…after the final chord is struck, when the band has exerted all its energy into building such a tremendous climax and ending on such a big chord, one would think that the band would let the chords and cymbals ring out into the air, as the crowd watches in awe at the mystique that “for reasons unseen” had spent the whole night building, rock song after rock song….BUT, out of nowhere, allen chooses to run center stage to the synth where he starts playing some random song. He says “wait, wait..” “this kinda sounds like that one song..” HAHA..we were dying of laughter…it was hilarious. Oh you had to be there.

“For Reasons Unseen” is slated to play this Friday at an M.I.T. frat house, with “The Broken Word” as opening act. Rumour has it that Preppy might be playing its first show at this particular venue, sandwiched between these two bands. Stay tuned. More info as the days progress…
But for now, back to work..

“I hear my mom comin’, I gotta go to bed..”

that’s right, the quote is from the movie Jerry Maguire, as stated by Ray (Jonathan Lipniki). What a great movie. It’s definitely one of those that you can watch over and over again, and still be moved each time. I don’t care that it’s a romantic comedy..it’s frickin great! Hehe..

But anyway, so it’s Monday and I just got through a weekend of working at the Gap. Not so bad, though I am starting to get tired of the music that they play there. If i hear that Britney Spears song, “Overprotected” one more time..

Regardless of the many hours spent at the registers, in the fitting rooms, and at the damn denim wall, I did manage to have a little fun. Thursday night after school we all went out for Zania’s surprise bday party @ some authentic puerto rican restaurant in cambridge. On Friday night after work, we all went to a party at Tre’s. It took a little while for things to start kickin, but when they did, it was pretty cool. Suddenly Nate was a redneck from Ohio named “Bruce”, complete with a moustache, sunglasses, and a John Deere cap, along with his sidekick “Rick”, (aka Allen) who had the theory that yelling “YO!!” to the girls across the alley would get them to come over to our party. Me and Shwin found ourselves as Brits, complete with accents, as my alter ego: “Robbie”, managed to catch the attention of some of the ladies..

However, as you can see, the night belonged to “Bruce”, as he managed to talk with all the ladies, and even keep the frat boys in check. It was all a joke, but it was a blast nonetheless. I did find it funny when I realized that all those “macho” frat boys are actually cowards, and they’ll do anything they can to avoid any kind of confrontation. They were totally shying away from any kind of conversation with Bruce and avoided eye contact. It was hilarious. I guess they all just have major insecurities. But don’t we all…

In other news, the wizards lost last night, to the freakin Denver Nuggets!! Unacceptable. I suppose we were tired, but we face the Sacramento Kings on Wednesday, so things do not get any easier. Anyway, I need to get back to work. A lot of catching up to do..

R.I.P. BACKUPP

Yes, it’s true. The “Backupp” Honda Civic is gonna have to go. Don’t have the time to fix it, so just decided to take a loss on it and try to get whatever I can for it. Tristan launched the auction today, so we’ll see what happens over the next 10 days. So sad, because it was such a good, reliable car; in great shape, and only had 54k miles on it. Hopefully it can make some ebay bidder happy. (click on the car for details)

Woke up around 9am today and then went to the breakfast club with Allen. It’s a cool little diner that’s near Harvard, in Brighton, where I used to live for my first year and a half @ berklee. I had never been before, but I had a killer omelette. Bacon and cheddar w/ home fries. Orange juice. mmm…okay getting hungry again…new subject..

Yeah, but anyway it was nice to sit down and chat about school, music, and of course…girls. Reminded me of back in the day; it was freshman year and Allen and I were going to the Pour House all the time. Talking endlessly about girls and relationships. I can’t believe it’s been nearly 4 years. Mind blowing. We haven’t grown one bit. haha..j/k.

In other news, the wizards won tonite. We beat the Portland Trailblazers, and are now 1/2 a game behind Milwaukee for the 8th and final playoff spot in the east. MJ, Stackhouse, and T-Lue had great games. Let’s hope that we can just keep the wins coming..

Alrighty, well that’s all for now…I gotta go to bed.

“I hear my mom comin…I gotta go to bed..”

Anybody guess what movie that quote is from? Don’t know? Well you’ll have to wait until NEXT entry for the answer! HA! Ok, enough of that. Sleepy time.

Back in Boston

So I’m back. It’s Sunday and I woke up about an hour ago. I got back yesterday at around 3pm, because I missed my flight (yes, again) in the AM. Haha..my flight was at 8:35am and I was totally prepared, I even got to the airport a good hour before departure. But the lines were soooo loong, it was unbelievable. Then, i’m standing in line for 15 minutes and learn that they are not checking in people when there’s less than 45 minutes left until departure. Something to do with this whole war thing going on…lol..

So I was pretty much idle in the airport for a good 3 hours or so. Had nothing to do but watch coverage on the War with Iraq. Fun stuff.

So yeah, I’m back and it’s good to be back. But I’ll miss being home. Time to get serious and back to school…finish off this year. Mom’s letting me borrow her new digital camera so I’ve been testing it out (as you can see). This thing rules. The resolution is unbelievable, and I can just slide it into my pocket. I’ll have to post some pics if I can find a place that will host them.

Last night, it was just me and Shwin in the house. Actually it’s still that way right now, most of the other guys probably won’t be getting back until sometime later today. Yesterday, was totally chill. Hit up borders, got my room in order, power is working again. Later, we played some nba, and then went out to chili’s out in harvard square for a late dinner. Those margaritas were very tempting. See, I have this bet with Shwin that he can’t go a month without drinking, but so far he’s gone a good 2 weeks with no drinks. Looks like I might owe him a dinner.. Oh well…there are other forms of “intoxication” you know…

Anyway, I think i’m gonna go start working on some school work. Wiz game later tonite @ Golden State. MJ is fed up. Let’s hope the guys can get it together tonite. Time’s a wastin’.. Peace.

Peace.
